Knives Go Back to the Dawn of Our Human History

Laurence Segal’s Westside Sharpening in Santa Monica, CA sharpens all knives and tools. He also sells custom made Rhino Knives.

Knives and tools are central to the development of human societies. About three million years ago the hominids from which we arose lived much like other animals.

These ancestors of ours hunted and gathered food. They ate only the food that was immediately edible to a human digestive system. No one appears to have had any tools at all.

. . . a swift, efficient job and the cost was right, too.

5.0 star rating - Yelp - Great, personal and fast service.. . . when we told Laurence we were in a big hurry (as in just a few hours) he told us he'd sharpen our knives right then and there for us.He did a swift, efficient job and the cost was right, too. Thank you!!! 7/24/2012, Nic J., Los Angeles, CA

Laurence , the owner , gave me a good education in knives and how they are made and what makes one different from another. Knives and Tools are the Hallmarks of Human Society

Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, knives are modern
About two million years ago a hominid known as Homo habilis first made a simple tool from stone. The earliest knives were made of rock, flint, and obsidian.

This hand axe was about the size of an adult's fist and sharply pointed.

The hand axe was used for breaking open bones to scoop out the marrow inside to eat. It also probably served as a weapon.

The hand axe was formed by taking a piece of flint, and breaking away all the pieces of flint which did not match the shape of the ideal hand axe.

This process is called flint-knapping, because the tool builder takes a piece of flint and chips off what does not match the shape he desires. Homo habilis made these hand axes for a million years before a new group of hominids, Homo erectus, came up with a new technology which is with us into modern times.

Before Homo erectus, there was only one tool in the world, and it was a hand axe.

Homo erectus hit upon a new method for producing hand axes. Instead of chopping away at a flint nodule until it looked like a hand axe, the new tool-makers would knock a piece of flint off a core, and then shape the splinter, or flake to the desired shape. This process created numerous sharp pieces of flint, which could be used as small knives or as scrapers on hides or bone.

Within 100,000 years, nearly all peoples in the world were using the new technique for making hand axes. Something else happened as well.

As the technique of flaking spread, new forms of flaking appeared as well. No longer were hominids making only hand axes.

They began fashioning new types of tools - drills, for putting holes in wood; awls for punching holes in leather; scrapers for cleaning the meat off of hides and bones; points for spears; and chisels for working stone, wood and bone; and knives for cutting meat or vegetables.

Westside Mobile Knife Sharpening is part of a tradition that goes back to the dawn of human history and is at the heart of our being human - creating and maintaining tools that allow us to feed and clothe ourselves and our children.
